A1(M) Forum: how can we plan for future growth?

Planning for London's growth, meeting Hertfordshire's housing needs and tackling the skills gap in key sector industries were just some of the issues debated at our first A1(M) Growth Area Forum.

Around 100 representatives from local employers, central and local Government departments, further education colleges and housing associations attended the A1(M) Growth Area Forum on 27 November at the Spirella Building, Letchworth.

As part of the debate attendees were invited to have their say on where investment should be prioritised. Find out more here.

A1M Growth Area

The A1(M) Growth Area

The A1(M) Growth Area comprises several large towns including Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth Garden City as well as a significant rural area.

Life sciences, aerospace, advanced manufacturing and ICT/Electronics have a strong local presence.

Economic and workforce growth is strong, unemployment is low and productivity is high. But the area faces challenges too with uneven growth and a tight labour market.

Our investment commitments

We are committed to improving our town centres and have secured £22m to help regenerate Stevenage and Hatfield town centres.

We are investing in skills with £0.8m for a STEM centre at Oaklands College and £0.4m for an Design and Innovation Centre at North Herts.

The life sciences sector has a strong presence in this area; to that end we have invested £3m to accelerate further development at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst.
