New research by Business Stortford, the organisation set up to attract inward investment to Bishop's Stortford, has identified a strong life sciences cluster in the town. Over twenty life / bio sciences companies have chosen to set up their headquarters, laboratories or offices in and around Bishop's Stortford.

They are capitalising on the town's location in the heart of the London - Stansted - Cambridge corridor; an area dubbed the 'Eastern Powerhouse' which experienced a 20% higher than average economic growth rate between 1997 and 2014.

Companies in the cluster include Fisher BioServices UK (part of Thermo Fisher Scientific), Medisafe Internatonal, CPL Aromas Ltd and Diageo. The latter has its Innovation Centre in Bishop's Stortford where some of the FTSE drinks giant’s best-known drinks were developed. It would be worth £1.4 billion* if measured on a stand-alone basis. The town is situated within a larger life sciences cluster which is reported to be the biggest outside the US. * Source: The Telegraph

Business Stortford is a joint collaboration between Hertfordshire LEP and Bishop's Stortford Chamber of Commerce. As well highlighting the town's life / bio sciences cluster, Business Stortford is capitalising on the town's unique location next to Stansted Airport to encourage companies to relocate to the area.

Bishop's Stortford is the closest town to the airport which serves more European destinations than anywhere else in the UK, plus it boasts excellent transport links to London, Cambridge and beyond. Business Stortford is targeting European businesses seeking a base in the UK, international companies wanting a well-connected location in Europe and UK firms looking for exceptional air transport links to Europe.

John Barfoot, Chair of Business Stortford said: "Bishop's Stortford is open for business. Our Welcome Programme is here to fast-track the relocation of other life and bio sciences companies who want to join the cluster."

Robert Lee, President of Bishops Stortford Chamber of Commerce said: "The fact that significant players in the life / bio sciences field have chosen to base themselves here in Bishop's Stortford clearly demonstrates its attractiveness as a gateway to Europe".

Business Stortford has set up a free Welcome Programme to facilitate a company's relocation or expansion to Bishop's Stortford. Town Ambassadors have been appointed to host visitors, give a VIP tour of the town and provide guidance about setting up business in the area.
