Netflix series, The Crown, premieres 4 November
A new £100m Netflix series, The Crown, premieres 4 November. The widely anticipated production covers the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Approximately a quarter of the filming takes places at a backlot at Elstree Studios. This backlot was cleared of 40,000 cubic metres of spoil in 2015 with the vital support of a £1m loan from the Hertfordshire LEP. The site now houses the exteriors of Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street, as well as some of the internal rooms of the Palace. Other areas of Hertfordshire including three stage at Elstree Studios are also being used in the production.
The Crown employs an enormous number of people. Around 400 additional personnel have been employed at Elstree during the production. There has also been an increase in spending in the local economy.
Filming for the second series has already begun and it is hoped the series will continue in Hertfordshire to 2019.
