The Da Vinci Studio School of Science and Engineering on Monkswood Way in Stevenage has been rated as Good by Ofsted following an inspection at the end of January 2014.

Both the teachers and students at the school, which opened in September 2012, are delighted to have received a Good rating in all areas of the inspection, which includes overall effectiveness, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management.

Inspectors heard from one of the students: ‘Teachers go that extra step. Because they care, we care’. They also were extremely impressed by the students’ excellent communication skills, having observed the student-led school council debating issues with confidence and persuasive powers.

Inspectors observed lessons and declared 83% of them to be good or outstanding and commented on the variety of teaching methods used having observed both traditional and more innovative teaching styles. Following observations of two different mathematics lessons inspectors noted that ‘students made equally good progress in both lessons because the teaching took account of what they had learned previously and motivated them to achieve.’

The Studio School curriculum is based on enterprise projects and real work, which was recognised by inspectors, who stated: “There is a positive, work-like atmosphere in this school. Expectations are high and teachers work hard to ensure students achieve well.” One parent told inspectors ‘each morning my son doesn’t say he’s going to school, he says he’s going to work’.

Donna Lodge, Principal of the Da Vinci Studio School commented: “We are extremely proud of our OFSTED rating and it is pleasing recognition of what such a small team has achieved in such a short period of time. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our amazingly talented team of staff who have selflessly devoted time and energy to developing our shared vision for the Da Vinci Studio School over the last 18 months. Our students are on track to secure excellent progress from their starting points and are thriving in their brand new learning environment now that our new school building is complete.”

The Da Vinci Studio School is the first school in Stevenage to receive a ‘Good’ rating under the new OFSTED framework. The school currently has 276 students aged 14 -19 on roll, and is accepting admission applications now for entry into year 10 and year 12 this September.
