Long-awaited work to reduce congestion on the A1(M) at junction 6 at Welwyn will start on Monday night. The work will take place between 10pm and 6am from Monday to Friday and will happen in two phases: the first phase will begin on Monday 8 December until 23 December, which will involve a full closure of the A1(M) northbound between junctions 4 and 7. The works will be lifted during the Christmas period and then continue on Monday 5 January until 16 January. The second phase will begin on 16 January until the end of March, which will involve closing the hard shoulder and lane one in both northbound and southbound directions between junctions 5 and 6 with a 50mph speed limit in place. Full closures of the A1(M) will be required towards the end of the scheme in order to erect the new overhead gantries and further information will be provided in advance of these closures. The £4.5 million scheme is hoped to ease traffic flow and is part of the Government’s £317million pinch point programme. For more information on the recently announced A1(M) widening click here.
