Speakers made the case for apprenticeships from the business perspective, demystified apprenticeship funding and new Levy, outlined the 'Disability Confident' scheme and how to recruit and retain staff from a wider pool of talent, gave accounts of their positive experiences as apprentices and explained the network of support available in Hertfordshire for employers interested in apprenticeships.
As a direct result of the event employers pledged to create 14 new apprenticeships either to take on new apprentices or upskill existing workers.
Faye Dean, an apprentice at GlaxoSmithKline, said: “I was happy to share my apprenticeship journey with employers in Hertfordshire. Everybody was so positive in their feedback and enthusiastic in their conversations with me. I hope it showed them the benefits apprenticeships can bring both for apprentices like me and to businesses.”
Grant Shapps, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, said: “The number of Welwyn Hatfield businesses in attendance at the event demonstrates their commitment to apprenticeships and their desire to use them to recruit skilled employees from the local area to grow and increase productivity. I hope and expect that more companies will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Welwyn’s award-winning John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance and provide excellent apprenticeship schemes to enhance their workforces.”
