Hertfordshire LEP would like to express our sincerest condolences on the death of Robert Gordon, who was suffering from cancer, on Friday 6 October. Robert had been Leader of Hertfordshire County Council since 2007, having been a Councillor since 1989, and was a valued member of the LEP Board from December 2012 to April 2013.

Mark Bretton, Chair of Hertfordshire LEP, said; “I was very sad to learn of Robert’s untimely death. As Chairman of the Local Enterprise Partnership I had come to know him through the various County level strategic committees which he chaired. Robert was a strong supporter of Hertfordshire business and encouraged the LEP to bring a bold agenda to drive growth, improve housing, infrastructure and the skills of the people who live in our county.

Robert was also a gentleman. When I took over as Chair last year he took the time to welcome me, give good guidance and offer an open door whenever we needed his support. I know that John Gourd my predecessor, Neil Hayes our Executive Director and our colleagues in the Board and Executive Team would wish to join me in offering our sincere condolences. Hertfordshire and wider UK Local Government has lost one of our Statesmen and Robert will be sorely missed.”

David Williams, Deputy Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “I am so saddened at this news. Rob was a wonderful colleague, hugely respected locally and nationally and a public servant in the truest sense of the word. Robert made Hertfordshire the County of Opportunity and worked relentlessly to achieve this. He will be sorely missed by all those he knew."
