Welding firm Weldability Sif has opened its new £1.7m Technology and Training Centre in Letchworth to help reduce a growing skills gap in the UK manufacturing industry.

The centre offers local businesses a ‘bay for a day’ service allowing them to be rented on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Guests who attended the launch enjoyed a tour of the facility, with one experienced welder left expressing his amazement,stating: “I have never seen anything like this before, it is fantastic.”

Adrian Hawkins, Weldability Sif Chairman and LEP Board Member, addressed attendees at the opening event and paid tribute to the strength of the Sif brand in surviving 2 wars, 3 recessions and 8 changes in UK government. Adrian added that although it had been quite a journey: “We won’t stop there! In our flagship, state-of-the-art Technology and Training Centre, we will continue to further develop our courses, simulators, and training products, as well as offer one of the finest welder-training and coding sites in the UK, providing much-needed facilities to the greater-London area.”

Sir Oliver Heald MP QC officially opened the centre which is celebrating its 90th year of business. Sir Oliver praised Adrian Hawkins for his commitment to and success in building an industry-leading business and his work in championing the re-industrialisation of the engineering sector.
