Supporting our key industry sectors

Hertfordshire has several internationally significant sectors, notably life sciences, agri-tech, advanced engineering/manufacturing, sustainable construction and the creative industries.

Cultivating these world-leading sectors is a cornerstone of our Strategic Economic Plan. We are delivering on our Growth Deal commitments to achieve this and collaborating more widely with neighbouring Local Enterprise Partnerships to maximise opportunities. Visit Invest in Herts to find out how we are achieving this.

Hertfordshire Enterprise Zone

In September 2017, Hertfordshire LEP as part of a consortium of LEPs including Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough, New Anglia and South East, developed the East of England Science and Innovation Audit (SIA), which highlights the region's sector strengths and the significant growth and investment opportunities they present. Encouraging research and development

Hertfordshire has long been recognised as an economy with substantial numbers of very small businesses, but relatively few that grow to medium size (and beyond), yet these are likely to be the principal wealth generators.

We are investing in projects and programmes to encourage research and development for commercial success to ensure future job creation and enable our innovative start-ups and small businesses to scale up and grow. We are removing barriers to growth by promoting opportunities for knowledge transfer to provide much needed developmental research services to Hertfordshire's burgeoning pharmaceutical, bio-tech and agri-tech sectors.

Strengthening the visitor economy

According to the latest figures, the total annual value of tourism to Hertfordshire is currently estimated at £2.1billion and supports almost 38,000 jobs across the county.

Visit Herts is the official visitor economy and business tourism service for the county, which promotes Hertfordshire to its residents as well as incoming visitors from the UK and overseas. Visit Herts (part of destination management specialists Go To Places Ltd) works in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, as well as the county’s district councils, transport providers and tourism businesses.

The economic impact of tourism in the county has been evaluated using the industry-respected Cambridge Economic Impact Model; view the Hertfordshire study.

Securing inward investment

We are unlocking future development at key sites particularly in relation to Hertfordshire’s new Enterprise Zone and ensuring that Hertfordshire’s leading businesses and research institutions are engaged in international trade.

We are also working with Government departments and national bodies to ensure that appropriate levels of investment are secured and with our local authority partners to avoid loss of employment land in locations that are critical to these sectors.
