HRH Duke of Edinburgh and Vice-Chancellor Quintin McKellar

The new £50m building houses laboratories, cutting-edge research technology and areas for informal learning and socialising. The project is a key milestone of the University’s 2020 vision and transformation of the College Lane campus.

Professor Quintin McKellar, Vice-Chancellor at the University and Hertfordshire LEP Board Member, said: “We are delighted that His Royal Highness came to visit the University today and opened our fantastic new science building at the College Lane Campus. The building marks another great development of the campus and will give students and staff a state-of-the-art space for research and learning.”

The Hertfordshire LEP awarded £2.5m Growth Deal funding to the University for the construction of the new building. Graham Lane, Hertfordshire LEP Board Member and SME Business Representative, attended the opening ceremony. He said: “We are delighted to have played a role in this exciting new phase of development by securing £2.5m Growth Deal funding to establish the Knowledge and Science Innovation Hub. This will be housed within the newly completed Science Block and will provide much needed developmental research services to support Hertfordshire’s burgeoning pharmaceutical, bio-technology and agri-technology sectors. Its function will be pivotal in supporting the transfer of knowledge from academic research to help SMEs develop new products and will strengthen further our considerable science assets.”
