St Albans City and District Council has joined the growing list of businesses and authorities now working with Visit Herts to promote the county to the world.
The local authority has become a full investor with the county’s destination management organisation in order to help raise the profile of the city and its surrounding attractions to new visitors in the UK and further afield.
St Albans has already enjoyed a positive year, having received substantial Government funding for two major projects. The council recently won a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £2.8million towards its ambitious plan to convert the city centre Town Hall into a state-of-the art museum and exhibition space. The cathedral also received more than £3.8million from the HLF, plus £3m raised from donors, to create a new welcome centre, library exhibition and study centre, thereby boosting the visitor offer even further.
Chief Executive of Visit Herts Sandra Matthews-Marsh MBE said: “We are delighted to have the beautiful, historic city of St Albans as a Visit Herts partner. The city is one of the gems of Hertfordshire, and with a rich history, stunning scenery, a glorious cathedral, and a buzzing metropolis.
“With the two HLF projects underway, a fantastic food and drink festival planned this month and famous Christmas market to look forward to, we have plenty to shout about here and we look forward to spreading the word about this magical city and the whole of Hertfordshire.”
Chair of St Albans Visitor Partnership Vicky La Trobe also said: “We are delighted that the council has taken this important step. Attracting visitors to St Albans and its surrounding villages and attractions is a critical part of the area’s economic development strategy. By partnering with Visit Herts, our businesses and organisations will be seen by a much greater potential market, both nationally and internationally than they could ever have managed alone.”
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism for St Albans City and District Council, said: “St Albans is an extraordinary City with a compelling history and has many visitor attractions with more to come. It also has a vibrant centre full of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.
“I am delighted that we have signed up to Visit Herts to further promote the City and surrounding district to the wider world.”
As an investor, St Albans will benefit from heightened listings on the www.visitherts.co.uk website, involvement in Visit Herts’ major marketing and PR campaigns, dedicated press visits and higher profile with travel trade operators for the city and its businesses. Visit Herts currently has 25 investor partners.
